This guide discusses how to create a scan and web scan to use the JavaScript Aware Crawler in beSECURE. Before you can use the JavaScript Aware Crawler, you must create and link together a scan and web scan in beSECURE. You can do this from three different areas in beSECURE:

  • The Crew New Scan wizard
  • The Scan List page
  • The Web Scan List page

This guide will only focus on the steps required to use the Create New Scan wizard, but the steps are mostly identical.

Creating a scan and a web scan

  1. Sign in to beSECURE.
  2. In the upper-left corner of the Home page. select Create New Scan.
  3. In the Scan Name box, enter a name for the scan.
  4. In the Range box, enter the IP address(es) and/or hostname(s) to scan. If you enter multiple entries, separate each with a comma (for example, 192.168.0.0, 192.168.0.1).
  5. In the Organization box, select from the organizations you've registered with your account.
  6. In the LSS box, select your local scanning server (if you've deployed one) or select an integrated cloud option.
  7. Leave the Create Web Scan checkbox selected.
  8. In the Contact box, select which contact in your account will receive notifications regarding the scan.
  9. All Notifications are selected by default. If you don't want the Contact to receive a notification, clear its checkbox.
  10. In the Schedule box, select when you want the scan to run.
  11. For Routine, select the corresponding frequency you want the scan to run based on your Schedule setting.
  12. Select Create to save your settings and schedule the scan and web scan.
  13. On the Scan Details page, select Other tab.
  14. In the Web Scans box, select the scan link. The Web Scans Details page appears.

Selecting and using the JavaScript Aware Crawler

When creating a web scan, a crawling job will be started immediately using the Scrapper Crawler Type (default). You will need to manually stop the crawler and switch it to the JavaScript Aware Crawler.

To select the JavaScript Aware Crawler Type, do the following:

  1. On the Web Scans Details page, select the Settings > Main tab.
  2. Scroll down to the Crawler Starting Points section.
  3. Select Stop for each active web scan.
  4. In the Crawler Type box for each web scan, select DOM.
  5. Select Crawl for each web scan.
  6. Once crawling is complete (or has been stopped), any crawled links will be added to the Dynamic or Static/Duplicate sections.

Starting a web scan

Crawling and scanning a website are two different actions. Crawling a website doesn't always trigger a web scan as it depends on how the web scan was created and configured.

To automatically start a web scan at the end of a crawl job, do the following:

  1. On the Web Scans Details page, select the Settings > Configuration tab.
  2. Verify the Automatically start scanning checkbox is selected. The website can be recrawled, which will start a web scan after the initial crawling has been completed.

You can also select Immediate Scan from the upper-right corner of the Web Scan Details page to scan immediately.
